Dipavali:
Celebrated in October-November to commemorate the return
of Rama to Ayodhya after his 14 years exile.
Dussehra:
Is celebrated in September-October. It commemorates
the victory of Rama(the good) over Ravana(the evil).
Holi:
Celebrated in the month of March. It marks the advent
of Spring.Is popularly known as the festival of
colour.
Janmastami:
celebrated all over Orissa in August as the Birth Day
of Lord Krishna.
Maha
Vishuba Sankranti:
Oriya New Year starts on this day. It also marks the
begining of the Summer.
Shiva
Ratri:
Celebrated on the 14th day of the new moon in March
in honour of Lord Shiva. Devotees observe fasting and
perform puja throughout the night and keep a vigil to
witness the sacred lamp burning on the temple top. The
festival can be best enjoyed at Mahendragiri, Gupteswar,
Kapilas, Puri, Bhubaneswar and Khiching.
Raja
Sankranti:
It is a festival of the farmers. It is the time when
they have no agricultural work. They worship mother
Earth for 3days and after that the tilling work starts.
Naga
chaturthi:
Dedicated to the mythical God of serpants - Naga Devata.
Snakes are worshiped on this day to obtain immunity
from snake bite.
Sitala
Sashthi (May - June) :
The celebration of the marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva
and Parvati starts from the 5th night of bright half
of Jyeshtha and the marriage is performed in the traditional
manner. Devotees act as the parents of Lord Shiva and
Goddess Parvati to perform the marriage.
Saraswati
Puja :
Celebrated in the month of January-February in the honour
of Goddess of Learning & fine arts - Saraswati.
